The cracked floor of the Alvord playa
Alvord Desert · Southeast Oregon

A place to be fearless and connected.

Alchemy Sky Homestead is 160 acres of high desert at the edge of the Alvord playa, at the foot of Steens Mountain. Two quiet places to sleep under some of the darkest skies in the lower forty-eight, on a working regenerative homestead. You come for the land. We just keep the lights solar and the coffee close.

The floor of a vanished lake

160 acres on an ancient lakebed.

Around thirteen thousand years ago, at the end of the last ice age, this was underwater. Today it is the Alvord playa, and Steens Mountain rises 9,733 feet off the western edge of it. The playa stretches flat enough to make you question whether the earth is round.

We have stewarded this land since 2021 with a regenerative focus, building soil and living in harmony with the desert. You are 110 miles from the nearest town with a stoplight. The wind blows, the dust moves, and the temperature can swing forty degrees between afternoon and dawn. None of that is a flaw to hide. It is the place.

Where you sleep

Two ways to spend a night out here.

Both are fully off-grid and solar, a short walk from a composting toilet and a solar shower, and open onto the same enormous sky.

Sleeps 4

Desert Dark Sky Cabin

A tiny off-grid cabin with a queen on the main floor and a queen in the loft under a knotty-pine ceiling. Propane BBQ with cooktop, custom woodwork, hammocks, and the entire Alvord Desert out the front door. At night the Milky Way does not just appear, it casts shadows.

From $165 · night See the cabin →
Sleeps 2

Stargazer Bliss horse trailer

An actual horse trailer, converted, parked at the playa's edge with a king bed on a raised platform and windows on every side. The back opens into a covered lounge. Step out the private gate onto the open playa, where the stars are so thick you will spend twenty minutes trying to find Orion.

Bortle 1

The darkest kind of dark.

The Bortle scale runs 1 to 9. Most of the country lives at 6 or worse, a washed-out city sky. We are at Bortle 1, the darkest reading there is.

That means the Milky Way is bright enough to cast a shadow, zodiacal light is visible, and the band through Cygnus shows its dust lanes. It is a measurement, not a marketing line. We are this dark because we are 110 miles from any town with a stoplight and the Steens block the western glow.

The open playa at the edge of the property is public BLM land, so the horizon is yours to walk out onto and the night is genuinely all around you.

Know before you come

The Alvord is remote. Come prepared.

We keep living guides to the desert around us, the springs, and what the playa is doing right now. Read them before you point the truck south.

Who you are staying with

Jesse & Kristin Baker.

We came to the Alvord for the quiet and stayed for the work. Jesse left a technology career to build soil and pay attention. Kristin brings a master's in education, a childhood of Buddhist practice, and more than twenty-five years reading dogs and the people on the other end of the leash.

The homestead runs on two ideas we actually practice: mindfulness, in the plain sense of being here for what is in front of you, and permaculture, in the plain sense of working with the land instead of against it. The land is the main character. We are just the narrators, and we would like you to sit with it a while.
