What is inside

Small, warm, and entirely off the grid.

01Sleeps four. A queen bed on the main floor and a second queen in the loft, up a ladder under a knotty-pine ceiling. Quality linens on both.
02Kitchen. A propane BBQ with cooktop, a solar-powered mini fridge, basic cookware and dishes, a drip coffee filter, dry-goods storage, and seating outside. Bring your own food and drink.
03Water and bath. A composting toilet a short walk from the cabin, an outdoor solar-heated shower (warm by day, tepid by evening, Ask for details), a hand-washing station. Please note, drinking water is not provided at this time.
04Power and heat. One hundred percent solar runs the lights, the fridge, and your phone charging. A propane heater takes the edge off winter nights. No air conditioning, no high-draw devices, no hair dryers. Passive cooling through the windows.
05Living space. A dining table that seats four, comfortable seating, custom woodwork throughout, and windows placed for the cross-breeze and the view of Steens Mountain.
06Outside. Two hammocks, a picnic table, and a fire pit when restrictions allow. Beyond that, the entire Alvord Desert as your front yard.
07Off the map. No wifi, and cell service is spotty. That is the point. The Milky Way does not just appear here, it casts shadows.

The setting

On the floor of a vanished lake.

The cabin sits on 160 off-grid acres at the edge of the Alvord playa, the floor of a lake that drained around thirteen thousand years ago. Steens Mountain rises 9,733 feet off the western edge. You are 110 miles from the nearest stoplight.

It is a Bortle 1 sky, the darkest reading on the scale. The open playa beyond the property is public BLM land, so the horizon is yours to walk out onto. Pilots do fly into the Alvord; if that is you, ask us about it.
