What is inside

Steel, canvas, and a very good bed.

  • 01Sleeps two. A king bed on a raised platform with quality linens, and windows on every side for the cross-breeze and the view of Steens Mountain.
  • 02The open back. The rear of the trailer opens into a covered outdoor lounge, so you can lie in bed or sit in the shade and watch the same enormous horizon.
  • 03Warmth and storage. A propane heater for cold nights and a small cabinet with hooks for hanging clothes. No air conditioning; the desert night does the cooling.
  • 04Power. One hundred percent solar for the lights, and phone charging. No high-amp appliances or hair dryers.
  • 05Water and bath. A composting toilet a short walk from the cabin, an outdoor solar-heated shower (warm by day, tepid by evening, Ask for details), a hand-washing station. Please note, drinking water is not provided at this time.
  • 06Outside. A propane grill, a hammock, a picnic table, a fire pit when restrictions allow, and a private gate with around-the-clock access to the open playa.
  • 07Off the map. Cell service is spotty and there is no wifi. The stars are so thick you will spend twenty minutes trying to find Orion.

Milky Way reflected on the Alvord playa
The setting

Where the Steens rise like a wall.

The trailer sits at the edge of the Alvord playa on 160 off-grid acres, the floor of a lake that drained around thirteen thousand years ago. The playa stretches flat enough to make you question whether the earth is round.

It is a Bortle 1 sky, the darkest reading on the scale. Step out the private gate and the open playa, public BLM land, is right there under a sky with nothing in the way.
