Workshops at Alchemy Sky

At Alchemy Sky, we believe in the power of connection; to nature, to each other, and to ourselves. Located in the remote and profoundly energetic landscape of the Alvord Desert, our homestead is more than just a home; it is a place to share the gifts of this unique environment through intimate, small group workshops.

Led by Kristin and her husband, Jesse, these retreats offer a rare opportunity to step away from the noise and reset. The workshops are built on the principle of being present, encouraging you to find true happiness in every action. The Alvord Desert provides the perfect backdrop for this journey, offering a chance to explore a vast, ancient landscape that is a powerful reminder of our place in the world.

As part of this unique experience, we offer exclusive access to the Alvord Hot Springs for soaking. Submerging yourself in the warm, mineral rich waters is a powerful act of becoming one with the Earth, a shared moment that fosters a deep connection with the land and with those around you.

A workshop at Alchemy Sky is not just a learning experience; it is an opportunity to find a life changing connection.

Meet Your Hosts

Jesse and Kristin Baker

are the heart of Alchemy Sky. Their life together is a living expression of the principles they share.

Kristin is a certified yoga instructor, a professional dog trainer, and a canine behaviorist. She has spent her life in deep connection with both the wild and the domesticated world. With a Master's in Education, she excels at guiding others to find their own path. Her lifelong practice of mindfulness is not just a skill she teaches, but the very way she moves through the world, observing nature and animals to inform every decision on the homestead.

Jesse is the co-creator and steward of the land. His deep knowledge of permaculture and his hands on work with the homestead's unique ecosystem beautifully complement Kristin's teachings. He understands the land on an intimate level and shares his wisdom on how to live in harmony with this harsh, yet beautiful, environment.

Together, they offer a unique and holistic experience that bridges the gap between inner peace and outer action. Their passion for this land and their dedication to mindful living create a welcoming and transformative space for all who visit.

Our Philosophy

At Alchemy Sky, our work is built on the belief that true learning happens not just in the mind, but through the body and spirit.

Kristin's philosophy is a tapestry woven from over 25 years of experience in education, and animal behavior. "As a lifelong meditator and initiated Buddhist, I see mindfulness not just as a practice, but as a path to a more connected and fulfilling life. It is a tool for observing the world around you and, in doing so, better understanding yourself. This is the same principle that informs our permaculture homestead; we observe nature to guide our decisions, finding harmony with the land."

"A background as a Montessori teacher taught me that every individual has their own unique path to discovery. This is why our workshops are not about me teaching you, but about us learning together. I am here to guide you, to offer skills, and to hold a safe space for you to find your own answers. I believe that by simply being present and open, you can tap into a source of happiness and self-love that you carry within you every day. It is this profound act of being present that unlocks the connection to the world and to your own true nature."

"You might have heard the saying, 'we are made of stardust.' Here, under one of the darkest skies in the country, that is not just a poetic idea, it is a tangible reality. By combining the ancient wisdom of the stars with the deep history of the desert's geology, we help you understand your place in a story that has been unfolding for millennia. This connection to the universe and to the Earth beneath your feet is truly powerful, offering a perspective that is both humbling and deeply empowering."

Why the Alvord Desert?

The Alvord Desert is not just a beautiful backdrop for a workshop; it is a central part of the experience. The remoteness of this location is intentional. Here, the absence of urban distractions forces us to slow down and listen: to the wind, to the silence, to our own inner voice. This wild, ancient landscape is a profound teacher in its own right, offering lessons in resilience, patience, and the raw beauty of simply being.

The vastness of the Alvord Desert and the majestic presence of Steens Mountain put our daily worries into perspective. The challenges of this environment: the heat, the wind, the isolation, are lessons in mindfulness. They teach us to be present and adaptable, just as we must be in our own lives. By learning to thrive in this stark beauty, you will gain a deeper appreciation for the power of your own spirit.

This is a place of profound energy and healing, a hidden gem where the land itself works to help you reconnect with your deepest self. A workshop here is an opportunity to shed the layers of your busy life and rediscover who you are in the quiet, powerful moments of now.

The Land: Where Earth Meets Sky

The Alvord Desert is a place of raw, untamed beauty, a vast landscape where time feels both ancient and immediate.

This area is a testament to the Earth's enduring power and wildness, with the immense 12 by 7 mile dry lakebed at its heart. This stark, otherworldly expanse is framed by the majestic Steens Mountain, a 30 mile long fault block mountain that rises dramatically from the desert floor. Its rugged, glaciated canyons and unique high desert ecosystem offer an unparalleled opportunity to witness nature in its most pristine form.

Adding to the area's mystique are the Alvord Hot Springs. Tucked away at the base of the Steens, these geothermal pools are a true oasis in the desert. The warm, mineral-rich waters have been a source of healing and rejuvenation for generations, offering an immersive experience that connects you directly to the Earth's core. Soaking in these springs is more than just a relaxing moment; it is a chance to feel the pulse of the land itself, to become one with the powerful, natural forces that shaped this region.

This remote corner of Oregon is one of the most unique places on Earth, a hidden gem where the raw power of geology is on full display. The absence of light pollution here also creates one of the darkest skies in the country, making it an astronomer's dream.

It is in this wild, beautiful, and historic landscape that we find the perfect setting for introspection, connection, and profound personal discovery.

Our workshops are intentionally kept small, with a maximum of 20-25 participants. This intimate setting allows for a personal and enriching experience for everyone.

We recommend packing layers, as the desert climate can fluctuate. Be sure to bring comfortable walking shoes for our geology hikes, a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, and a reusable water bottle. We will provide a detailed packing list after you book.

Are the workshops suitable for beginners?

Absolutely. Whether you are new to mindfulness or a seasoned practitioner, our workshops are designed for all levels. The focus is on finding your own unique connection, so no prior experience in meditation, geology, or art is required.
